If you are looking for a "proper" local d.i.y shop, much smaller than B&Q, you should give Leyland a look.
Leyland white paints in particular are very good value and last years without too much discolouring (i.e. the paint stays white for years).
If you need brand name bathroom, toilet and kitchen cleaners and general household items, you should visit Wilko.
If you want quality, long lasting, designer furniture, IKEA should be your first stop.
With IKEA you are paying the price for high quality materials, used in both their traditional and unique designer furniture.
Poundland is a shop where most, if not all, items are just £1.
Although many goods are 'cheap and nasty' and not worth buying, their screwdrivers, gardening equipment and silicone are value for money.
On this web page is a list of website links and contact details of shops you might want to consider visiting/contacting for the purpose of property renovation and do-it-yourself (d.i.y) projects; including household item and furniture shops. I have also mentioned some of the decorating materials I have used and highly recommend.
The website links and contact details concentrate on the shops and professionals I have used, in some cases for years, and still use therefore saving you the research time, money and energy it took me to originally find them and try them out. Hopefully you will find these resources useful too.

Timpsons is better known as a Key Cutter and Cobbler (Shoe Repair) shop, but over the decades they have evolved with Engraving, Watch Repair, Dry Cleaning & Laundry, Phone & Tablet Repair and Pet Tag services. From a renovation point of view you would use them to have your keys cut, buy a letterbox and have a house sign and/or number made. They are the equivalent of Mr Mint in Hungary.
With 1,850 shops across the country, there should be a Timpson shop near you.
